چکیده

A great deal of effort continues to be spent on the fundamental interaction of the particles of plasma physics. In this group we have concentrated on measuring diffusion coefficients, collision probabilities, particularly in partially ionized and fully ionized gases, and on the mechanism of production of radiation. Within the last few years we have studied the production of microwave radiation, and we are pushing this toward shorter and shorter wavelengths in the direction of the very long infrared. Our objective in this area is to study as many of the mechanisms involved in electron-atom and electron-molecule collisions as are susceptible to our microwave, infrared, and probe techniques. S. C. Viii. Gaseous Electronics Academic and Research Staff A. Comparison of Measured Time-dependent Electron Velocity Distributions with a Theoretical Model

In Quarterly Progress Report No. 80 (page 99) a method was discussed for extracting information on the velocity distribution of electrons in a plasma from measurements of the spectrum of emitted microwave radiation. Briefly, in the neighborhood of wB' the electron cyclotron frequency of an applied magnetic field, the departure of the effective radiation temperature, Tr(w), from a constant value...

Microwave Diagnostic Results from the Gaseous Electronics Conference RF Reference Cell

Electron density measurements with even the simplest microwave interferometry techniques can range over three to four orders of magnitude, can be responsive on time scales as fast as 50 ns, and are simple to obtain and interpret. Three groups have published electron density data taken in the Gaseous Electronics Conference (GEC) reference reactor using microwave interferometry. The agreement in ...

Academic and Research Staff A. Time -dependent Characteristics of Pulsed Ion Lasers

Our general objectives are concerned with the study of atomic and molecular processes and with the transport of charged particles in weakly ionized collision-dominated plasmas. We are devoting our efforts to those problems in gaseous electronics that are relevant to the physics of gas lasers. These devices have numerous applications. We are expanding our studies of gas lasers to the development...

Theory of Gas Ionization by Intense Electromagnetic Fields

The distribution function of the electrons produced in the interaction between an intense electromagnetic wave and a neutral gas is derived and is shown to be nonequilibrium and anisotropic. By assuming that the time scale of gas ionization is much greater than the field period, it is shown that the electron distribution function formed in microwave and optical discharges has sharp anisotropy a...

Exact time-dependent evolution of electron-velocity distribution functions in a gas using the Boltzmann equation.

Drallos PJ, Wadehra JM. Exact time-dependent evolution of electron-velocity distribution functions in a gas using the Boltzmann equation. A numerical technique, starting from the Boltzmann equation, for obtaining the time-dependent behavior of the electron-velocity distribution function in a gas is presented. A unique feature of this technique is that, unlike previously used procedures, it does...
